Weapons of the War

Posted by Matt Markby on 11th Aug 2021

Weapons of the war. It's tour time.

The 108th edition of the world's biggest bike race is well underway with all 23 teams entering their third and final week of competition. Slovenian climber-come-everything, Tadej Pogacar has an unwavering grip on the General Classification and looks set to take his second title at La Grande Boucle. Racing however, is only half of the equation at the Tour de France. July is also a showcase for new technology and this year is no exception. Let's take a look.

Same team. New bike

Team INEOS Grenadiers have a new chassis to enjoy alongside the current Dogma F12. The new Dogma F was teased at the Critérium du Dauphiné and officially launched on the 24th of last month.

F takes many of the features of the contemporary F12 but lowers the stays and shaves 265 grams off the frameset weight (53, disc). That translates into a sub 7kg disc brake bike (without pedals) on 9170 with DT ARC 1400 hoops!

Pinarello Dogma F

Balance

-One bike for all terrain

Dogma F is the perfect bike for every rider on any terrain. That's because real-world riders aren't specialised... Climb and descend with equal flair, attack every corner and make each watt count on the finishing straight. No matter the circumstances, Dogma F puts you in the driver's seat.

Every gram counts

-265 grams lighter vs. F12

The team at Pinarello are the first to admit weight has never been at the forefront of their design language. After all, scales are so often misleading! Ride quality, responsiveness and comfort are all factors that lend to the perfect ride. The new F series is the first in a lineage of bikes, to maintain these foundational tenants while pandering to the weight weenies. By focusing on the seat post, headset, fork and cockpit, Pinarello's engineers were able to bank the savings without the opportunity cost.

Aerodynamics & power transfer

-4.8% reduction in drag co-efficient

-12% increase in bottom bracket stiffness

-ONDA fork overhaul

In addition to weight savings, Dogma F further refines what Pinarello are known for - performance. The ONDA fork profile has been completely revised with two entirely different layups for rim and disc brakes. Thanks to innovation derived directly from Bolide, the blades of the new fork act as sails, driving forward momentum in crosswind conditions - an effect that is amplified as the wind gets stronger. When coupled with a 12% increase in bottom bracket stiffness, Dogma F represents far more than a few grams saved. It's a personal best at your next event.

New Zealand arrivals

Pinarello Dogma F is a concurrent line with F12 for model year 2022. As such, only a limited number of complete bikes are due for delivery to New Zealand and Australia for the remainder of the calendar year.

We are currently taking expressions of interest for this model. There will be a handful of complete bikes arriving in September followed by frame only deliveries in the summer of 2022. Dogma F12 will still be available with new stock arriving soon.

Cavendish is back.

After a long time out in the cold, legendary British sprinter Mark Cavendish has returned to his winning ways at the highest level of the sport. The manxman has secured 3 wins so far equaling the great Eddy Merckx's record of 34 stage victories at the french grand tour. His final chance to better the Belgian comes in couple of days time on the Champs Élysées.

What does it take to get back to the top? Cavenish is backed by an incredible team and an equally powerful steed.

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7.

American heavyweights Specialized are the driving force behind Mark Cavendish's resurgence. Although it's been a few years since the Manx Missile was last seen sporting the 'S', he has once again found a certain affinity for the brand.

Like Pinarello, Specialized have a one model solution for all racing conditions. Having discontinued 'Venge' (aero) back in 2020, the entire racing stable was swiftly assimilated under Tarmac. The choice for consumers is now very simple; less weight, greater integration and improved tyre clearance. One bike to rule them all.

New wheel tech. PCW 4550.

A few weeks ago we touched on the Princeton CarbonWorks 6560, Blur and Grit wheelsets. After a hugely positive reception, we've decided to add the all new Peak 4550 to our range.

Released exclusively for the Tour de France, the Peak 4550 Launch Edition is being rolled out to consumers in the near future. Unlike the existing Grit, 4550 is a lightweight, road specific hoop designed to flatten mountains.

Labelled the “Meilenstein Killer” by Princeton founder Harrison Macris, the wheelset is designed to outperform blue chip incumbents, CarbonSports and their ever successful Lightweight Meilenstein. In a direct comparison, the 4550 comes out 91g lighter than the base model Meilenstein and according to PCW, it's also stiffer and more aero.

The all new Launch Edition is set to hit our shores in the coming weeks. We have 3 of these exclusive wheelsets on offer with standard versions landing towards the end of the year.
